Like many frustrated conservatives and Republicans, I may have gone overboard recently when I promised my liberal friends that if President Obama was re-elected I would leave the country. Being in the software business and being about to work virtually from anywhere, this seemed like it wouldn’t be so hard. Obviously, I knew I wouldn’t be moving to Canada to pay half my salary to the Canadian government each year, and Europe was completely out — but I figured there must be a nice libertarian island in the Caribbean somewhere I could move to that has low taxes, and minimal government. Post-election research has now concluded, and it would seem that no such island exists. Perhaps Ronald Reagan was right when he said that “If freedom falls here, there is nowhere to retreat to — this is (was) the last stand of freedom on this Earth.”
This quote came from a famous story that Reagan told about two business men being in the back of a taxi in Miami when the driver regaled them with his story of swimming ashore to escape the tyrannical communist regime in Cuba. When the story was finished, the two business men looked at each other and exclaimed, “We don’t know how lucky we are!” — To which the Cuban driver replied, “How lucky you are? At least I had somewhere to escape to.”
Sadly, we conservatives are now living in exile within our own borders and have not yet found a place to escape to. That is why I founded Conservative Island.
Picture leaving one of the liberal entrenched coasts in a life raft, spending days afloat in search of land. You spy a white sandy speck in the distance, and you begin to swim for shore. The waves wash you up exhausted, thirsty, tired and hungry. You are greeted by a smiling tanned man wearing a white linen suit in bare feet — holding out a glass of single malt scotch, or perhaps a Pina Colada.
You feel instantly at home, surrounded by like-minded people. No more taxes, no more government regulation, no more altruistic liberals berating you for not caring enough about those would aren’t willing to try as hard as you have in life.
Welcome my friends, to Conservative Island!
